Dr Tony Aidoo, a leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has postulated that former President John Mahama can be trusted to lead the party in the 2024 elections.
“The 2020 flagbearer of the NDC’s ability to admit and learn from his past mistakes gives him a better chance to contest the presidential race in the next general election despite my earlier criticisms against the Mahama-led administration,” he assured.
He explained that his earlier criticism stemmed from the failure of the country’s probity, transparency and accountability test but believes the former President was preferred choice for the NDC.
According to him, people learn from their mistakes and he believes former President Mahama was a good learner, has admitted he made some mistakes which he admitted during the campaign for the 2020 elections.
Dr Aidoo, the former Deputy Minister of Defence, maintained that the former president could be trusted to keep faith with himself and with the citizenry of this country and urged the NDC to return to its ideological identification as it sought to take over power in the next elections.
He said he had never been very functional in recent times in the party’s organisation but advised the leadership of the party to use the opportunity to go back to its ideological identification, adding that “if it is socialist, it must embrace socialist principles, you cannot create so-called middle class develop mentalists through petty bourgeoisie that is self-seeking, selfish and materialistic”.
Dr Tony Aidoo observed that following the former President Mahama’s loss in the 2020 presidential election, he was yet to state his desire to run for political office in the future however, during his ‘Thank You’ tours of the country last year, he stated the party would be more vigilant at the polls to secure victory saying “the National Executives of the NDC has pledged to deploy professional polling agents to oversee the 2024 elections on all levels”. –myjoyonline.com
